“Pile” in the exhibition Sweet Jesus in St. Louis, MO

October 24, 2010

Coble/Riley Projects is participating in the exhibition Sweet Jesus on November 19 & 20th, organized by artist/curator Lauren Adams and Juan William Chavez. The exhibition venue is a great match for our work, an enormous old abandoned brewery!

This will be the first time that our piece Pile will be shown in its full screen three-channel format. Blithe will be going to St. Louis to install the piece, taking the unique location into account. Coble/Riley Projects will also be participating in a panel discussion open to the public on November 20th.

The Edna Experiments, 2011

June 19, 2010

The Edna Experiments

The Edna Experiments is a multi-media installation based on a series of found diaries of a woman named Edna. The diaries span approximately 15 years (from the late 1950’s to early ‘70’s) and portray meticulous details of Edna’s daily life but absolutely no emotion. The diaries list daily routines (washing, ironing, mending, gardening), the weather, the people who visit, and deaths. The books are records of an edited life, where what is preserved is terse, systematic and rooted in domestic and rural labor. The relationships between people are never revealed. As a reader, insight can only be gained through the accumulation of action and repetition. Very few moments stand out above the others.

The Edna Experiments explores this found personal history not only through the information that is in the diaries, but also through what is missing. The project looks at our own process of interpretation, including the desire to expand the narrative of Edna’s life beyond her methodical practice of everyday record keeping. That desire to “fill in the blanks” of an incomplete narrative is a key point of interest in the project. Ultimately, The Edna Experiments explores what constitutes a lived life, and our need for closure and meaning when we look to memorialize those who are gone.

25 Frames, 2010

25 Frames, 2010

These cheesy picture frames that I was given to make work for the an annual benefit for Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, proved to provide an interesting challenge for a series of imaginary floorplans. In the 5×7″ frames I made collages using photographs of building and facade materia and box pantone paper. Also installed are miniature lights which add depth and shadow.

These came from a very simple drawing I made, in which was thinking about how to divide and fragment a screen for a figure to move through. This piece is most likely the first iteration of a further idea. I’m excited about the three dimensional grid, and the combination of the 2-d picture plane and the floorplan, which prompts the viewer to imagine his/herself in it.

25 Frames

April 14, 2010

I’ve been working on this set of 25 frames for an annual benefit for Skowhegan. The frames are 5″ x 7″ plexiglass boxes. In the frames I made collages using photographs of building and facade materia and box pantone paper. Also installed are miniature lights. I think of these as imaginary floorplans.
