Radical Feminist Dance Troupe
2002-2005

In 2002 I co-founded a radical feminist street dance troupe in Chicago called Pink Bloque. Video documentation of the group’s street actions (co-edited with Dara Greenwald) continues to screen around and about.

Description of Pink Bloque (text by Dara Greenwald)

The Pink Bloque (pronounced “bloc”) was a multi-issue, multi-outfit radical feminist street dance troupe which used popular culture and performance theory to give post 9-11 protest culture a radical makeover. Formed in the spring of 2002, the Pink Bloque threw street dance actions for issues ranging from the Patriot Act to date rape to the war in Iraq and more.

The Bloque challenged traditional notions of activism and performance by breaking down performance theory into cute accessible language, replicating MTV style dance moves for use at street protests and inscribing radical leftist meanings onto the most innocuous of pop songs. Members of the Pink Bloque were artists, social service providers, students, and waitresses whose educations range from recent high school graduates to doctoral candidates.

A full history of performances, interventions, panels and workshops is available at pinkbloque.org
